On the mining colony of Mars, Darrow toils as a Helldiver among the Reds — lowColors told they are pioneering humanity's future. When his wife Eo is hanged for singing a forbidden song, the lie is exposed, and Darrow is carved into a Gold to destroy the Society from within.
At the Institute, Gold children are forged into killers in a brutal proving ground. There, Darrow conquers House Mars, earns the name Reaper, and begins the long game that will tear the Color hierarchy down.

Two years after the Institute, Darrow serves as lancer to ArchGovernor Nero au Augustus, commanding fleets in the wars of Gold. But the Sovereign suspects him, the Bellona hunt him, and even his friends are not what they seem.
From the duel at the Gala to the blood-soaked Iron Rain on Mars, the war for the Society's soul escalates — until a single celebration ends in fire, and Darrow wakes in the darkness of a traitor's cell.
